I've Been In My Home For 17years Now, Built In 1956. When We Moved In The Unfinished Side Of My Basement Was Freshly Painted, Walls And Floor. For The Past Several Years I Occasionaly Get Water On The Floor During Heavy Rain Or Several Days Of Rain. I Have Noticed That There Are Pockets Of Sagging Paint On The Basement Wall, These Pockets Contain Crumbled Cement. It Seems The Previous Waterpfoof Sealer Could Use A New Application. I Have Wire Brushed The Entire Surface Clean And Removed All Loose Paint And Debris. Is It Possible To Apply Waterproofing Over My Now Prepared Surface And What Is The Normal Life Expectancy Of A Do-it-yourself Application.

Interior coatings ,if they work at all, seal the water inside the wall deteriorating the concrete.Basement walls should never be painted and allowed to breathe.Since they have already been painted, you have nothing to lose by painting them again but don't count on it to stop water.Improve outside drainage by grading and keep gutters in good repair. If problem persists, have a professional install a french drain.Check out wetbasementguy.com for other tips.
