Nails popping in ceiling

Has anyone with a split foyer home had nails popping through the second floor ceiling of their homes? I have notice over the last couple of months several quarter size circles on the ceilings in my upstairs ceiling. Patched one and then notice that the patch seemed to grow in size but a survey of the attic area does not show anything.

Any suggestions on what type of professional to ask to look at the problem? I am in the suthern Maryland area.

This may not be a structural problem. Are there mapping cracks appearing in drywall or other areas of home or foundation? Nail pops are common, even expected. They are caused by the wet/new wood drying and forcing nails backwards, as well as the drywall "mud" drying etc.
